Chapter 15

Cassie

“Aww.” I fawned over yet another photo of Marie and Louis, Emily’s cats.

“Right?” She beamed at the photo and finally put her phone away. “The timing was so perfect. I got the call about these two like right after Jarod and I broke up.” She shook her head. “He was so allergic to cats.”

“Yeah, I remember.” I glanced around the cafe’s dark amber interior. Rustic paintings of colorful chickens lined the walls, and the ceramic salt and pepper shakers on every table were shaped like roosters. No wonder the place was called The Soup Coop.

The couple next to us—a tan Asian man and petite Black woman, both fashionably dressed—laughed and gazed lovingly at one another. The man’s glasses were similar in shape and style to Tom’s, although green and gold instead of black and silver—

“What’s up, Cassie? You doing okay?”

I snapped my gaze back to Emily. “Yeah, I’m fine. It’s just this whole two-weeks-in-New-York thing is throwing me off.” Most of my work trips hadn’t lasted longer than a few days, and for the handful of international trips that had kept me through the weekend, Tom had been there to keep me company.

Inviting Tom to do anything this weekend was out of the question, which was why I was at The Soup Coop with Emily for lunch on Saturday, staring at a terabyte’s worth of cat photos.

“Aw! Well, if you ever don’t have plans, you’re welcome to come over and hang out with me, Louis, and Marie.”

“Thanks, Em. I think I’m good. I have a lot of work to do, I just wish that I could do it from the comfort of my home.”

“Yeah, I understand. I’ve had to travel a lot this year, too, especially when Jarod moved to DC.” She picked at her salad, glanced at her left hand, and sighed.

I blew on a spoonful of tomato bisque and tested it with my tongue. Still too hot. “You’re dating again, right? How’s that been going?”

“I changed my mind. I’m holding off until I feel a little more balanced. Jarod and I were together for four years, so...” She smiled wryly. “You aren’t going to try to get me to date Tom again, are you?”

I coughed as tomato bisque burned my throat. “What? No! He’s basically our boss now.”

“He was totally clueless on our walk together that one time. But now that I work more closely with him, I can see why you think so highly of him. He’s really good at what he does. And his cluelessness...” She bit her lip. “I dunno, maybe it’s kinda cute.”

A lump plopped into my stomach. “Okay, but like I said, he’s basically our boss.”

She sat up and gave me a so? look. “Doesn’t that just make it hotter? Forbidden office romance?”

The lump expanded, pressing on my insides. My appetite evaporated. “Um, no? That makes it wrong.”

She laughed. “Lighten up, Cassie, I was just joking.”

“I know, but still.”

The pressure eased a little, but Emily’s eyes grew thoughtful.

“Has something happened between you
